William A. West died at 11:50 o'clock Sunday night, in his home at 203 Court Street, after a protracted and painful illness. He was 66 years of age, and one of Portsmouth's most widely known citizens.
He was engaged in the lumber business up to the time of his death, and had become quite prosperous.
He was born in Cornland, Norfolk county, and was the son of the late John West.
In the Civill War he served as a sergeant of Company A, 61st Regiment, Virginia Infantry.
Mr. West was a member of Monumental M. E. church and for a number of years was superintendent of the Sunday School of that church. He was a member of Seaboard Lodge, A. F. & A. M. and Ocean Counell, Royal Arcanum.
The deceased was a brother of Capt. J. T. West, superintendent of Norfolk county public schools.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from Monumental church and the interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.

Funeral services will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon, June 25, at 3:30 o'clock, from Monumental M. E. Church. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Cedar Grove cemetery.

William A. West---Rev. Joseph N. Latham, pastor of the Monumental Methodist Episcopal church, conducted funeral service for William A. West in the church at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
He was assisted by Rev. E. H. Rawlings, a former pastor of the church, and Rev. R. B. Garrett, pastor of the Court Street Baptist Church.
The nephews of Mr. West were the active pall-bearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Frank L. Crocker, James P. Stubbs, Rascom Sykes, James Toomer, C. r. Johnson, Dr. Etheredge, Colonel William H. Stewart and Captain Wallace.
Interment took place in the Cedar Grove cemetery.

William A. West was in lumber business in Portsmouth & Norfolk County Va. William A. West was born near Dismal Swamp at a place that was known as "Cornland", March 19th 1841. He was the son of John West and grandson of William West who decended from Nathaniel West one of the West brothers in the early history of Va., beleaved to be the first West to settle in Norfolk.
William West the grandfather of William A. West was in the Rev. War John West the father of William A. West was born 1814. Capt. prior to Civil War. His wife was Sarah A. Hodges who was born 1816 & died 1850. They had three known sons:

William A. West Jr. leased his farm in 1896 and moved to Portsmouth to attend his lumber interest. He married Bettie F. Smith who was born 1841 in Culpepper Co., Va. duaghter, Peter & Sarah A. (Nelson) Smith. Peter Smith was born in Rappahannock Co., Va. June 11th 1815. He was a stock dealer and farmer. Sarah (Nelson) Smith was born Loudoun Co., Va. 1814 and died 1884.
William a. West and Bettie F. (Smith) West had one known son John William Casper West who attended Blackburg Military Academy. William A. West was a member of Board of Steward Monumental Methodist Church South and Superintendant of the Church. His wife Bettie F. West was a Baptist.

Last Will & Testament of William A. West
This my last will and testament written this the 10th day of June 1907, witness that, I will to my wife Bettie F. West the two brick houses on Court Street nos. 203 & 205, also the money accuring from the Royal Arcanum insurance, and the money now in Bank to her credit and enough other money from the estate to amount in all to five thousand & five hundred dollars, to use at her free will so long as she shall live. Then it shall descend to my son Casper West, but if he should be the shortest liver, then it shall be divided amoung my nearest kin. I also will to Bertie V. Keeling two thousand dollars--and to A. A. Wilson two hundred and fifty dollars to help him in his present distress,--(I herewith request my son to pay to the Methodist Orphan Asylum, at Richmond, Va., the sum of three hundred dollars.
All the balance of my property including my interests in the West Lumber Co. and the Eureka Brick Co. I will to my son Casper West. I herewith appoint my son Casper West and my wife Bettie F. West to administer my estate (without bond).

In the Clerk's Office of the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth, on the 27th day of June 1907. A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Wm. A. West, late of this City, deceased, was this day produced before me, and there being no subscribing witness to the said will, J. P. Stubbs and F. S. Hope were sworn and severally deposed that they are well acquainted with the handwriting of the said Wm. A. West, deceased, and verily believe that the said will, and the signature thereto subscribed, are wholly in the handwriting of the said Wm. A. West, deceased; whereupon the same is ordered to be recorded as the true last will and testament of the said Wm. A. West, deceased; and therupon Bettie F. West, by writing under her hand produced before me and filed, who is nominated in said will as executrix, renounced her right to qualify and requests that Casper West, who is nominated in said will as executor, be allowed to qualify as sole executor under said will; and thereupon on the motion of Casper West, the only Executor named in the said will, who made oath as the law directs, and entered into a bond in the penalty of forty six thousand dollars, conditioned according to law, (but without security, the will directing that none should be required of him, and which said bond being acknowledged by the obligor therein, is ordered to be recorded), certificate is granted the said Casper West for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form.

William Richard West--Funeral services for William Richard West, aged 93 years, who died last night at 10:30 o'clock at the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lovey Susan West, 105 Eighth Avenue, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Snellings Funeral Home. Mr. West was a farmer, a native of Accomac county, and had resided in Portsmouth for 73 years.
Besides his daughter-in-law, he is survived by two grandsons, Milford and William Jesse West; four great-grandchildren, Eugene, Mary Sue, Lemuel Lee and Phyllis West; a step-granddaughter, Mrs. Frank Harmon; seven step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. West was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Funeral services for William Richard West, aged 3 years (typo--should be 93), who died at 10:30 o'clock Monday night at the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lovey Susan West, 105 Eighth Avenue, were held yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Snellings Funeral Home, with Rev. W. H. Baylor, pastor of Park View Baptist Church, officiating. Interment took place in Oak Grove Cemetery.
During the services, Mrs. L. W. Futrell, accompanied by Mrs. J. D. Hanbury, sang "Sunrise" and "Where We'll Never Grow Old."
The casket was covered with a spray of Easter lilies and white carnations. There was a standing wreath from the Naval Hospital employes and numerous other floral tributtes from friends and neighbors.
Honorary pallbearers were George R. Parrish, L. McK. Jack, Joseph F. Culpepper, Alex Culpepper, Johnnie Shea, Pearle J. Wilson, C. E. Warren, G. T. Bridgers and Mr. Mahoney.
Active pallbearers were E. R. Bailey, C. C. Bailey, E. L. Walton, J. D. Johnson, J. E. West and Julian Whitson.
