The funeral of Dr. James L. Hatton took place Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from St. John's church, and was largely attended. The Rev. J. D. Powell conducted the services, and the remains were interred in Cedar Grove cemetery. Town Meeting
A large and respectable meeting of the citizens of Portsmouth, was held at the Town Hall on Monday evening, Oct. 19th, agreeable to public notice. At the proper time, A. F. Cunningham called the meeting to order; and on his motion, James Murdaugh, Esq. was called to the Chair, and I.C. Schoolfield was appointed Secretary.
The Chairman stated the object of the meeting in a brief address, in which he touchinly adverted to the present embarrassed condition of Portsmouth, and urged the importance of vigorous and united action, in order that our accustomed presperity might be attained.
A. F. Cunningham also addressed the meeting in a forcible and animated manner; previous to resuming his seat, on his motion, a Committee of twenty-five was appointed to deliberate on matters pertaining to the interests of the Town, and to report such action as they deem expedient and desirable at a subsequent meeting. The following gentlemen were appointed as the Committee:

Another Fire---This morning about 2 o'clock the alarm of fire was again heard in Portsmouth, which proved to be an unfinished frame tenement, situated over Swimming Point bridge near the Hospital lane, which was burned to the ground in a few minutes. The firemen were promptly on the spot, and used every exertion to save the building, but on account of the scarcity of water, they could do but little good. The property belonged to Mr. J. G. Hatton (cost $2000) and was insured in the Lynchburg Company for $1000. This fire, like the other, is supposed to be an incendiary act.

He is survived by two sisters, Miss Emeline Hatton and Mrs. Edgar Nash, and numerous other relatives.
The funeral service will be conducted at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon in the residence, 423 London street. Burial will be private.

The pall-bearers were as follows: Hatton Nash, Edgar Nash Jr., Thomas Nash, William H. Martin, D. Sullivan, Joseph S. Moore, Leckie Hatton and Alfred Riddick.
