Whereas Edward Alexander Hatton, James Lewis Hatton, Miss Mary Ann Hatton, and William Leckie Hatton are the joint owners of several lots pieces or parcels of land with their appurtenances situate in the City of Portsmouth and two tracts of land situate in the County of Norfolk and near to the City of Portsmouth, one called the "Leckie tract" the other "Poor House tract" as the heirs and only heirs at law of their father & mother John G. & Emaline Hatton deceased, and being so possed are desirous of making an equal partition and division of the same among themselves and for that purpose do now execute this deed, the said Edward Alexander and James Lewis Hatton each having an undivided one fourth interest of so much of the "Leckie tract as lies East of the road leading to the U.S. Naval Hospital conveyed to them by their father & mother do now for the purpose of making a division surrender the same to be placed in Hotch potch--Therefore this Deed made this first day of Jamuary in the year 1866 between the said Edward Alexander Hatton and Susan R. his wife, the said James Lewis Hatton and Olivia J. his wife, Miiss Mary Ann Hatton and William Leckie Hatton. Witnesseth that it is mutually agreed by and between the parties hereto that the following described partition allottment and division between the parties shall be held firm and stable between them their heirs executors administrators and assigns forever, that is to say Edward A. Hatton is to have hold use poses and enjoy as of his own estate, the following all of that lot situate on the south side of North Street with the western portion of the Brick House bounded as follows commencing on the south side of North Street and at a point one hundred an ten feet east of the S. E. intersection of Crawford & North Streets, thence East ninety-four feet six inches to the partition wall of the brick building, thence south one hundred & thirteen feet, thence west ninety four feet six inches, thence north one hundred and thirteen feet to the beginning, also a part of the lot situate on the south side of London Street purchased of A. C. Godwin, commencing on the southside of London Street at the West line of Cowley's lot, and running along Cowley's & others line south one hundred & thirteen feet, west twenty eight feet, thence north one hundred & thirteen feet, to London street, thence East along London Street twenty eight feet to the beginning, also Lot No. 1 (one) in the plan hereto annexed and to be recorded with this deed of the "Leckie tract" lying west of the road to the U. S. Naval Hospital, and contains nineteen & six tenths acres, and to receive from the estate of his father scrip of the town of Portsmouth for one thousand dollars and the arreages of interest due thereon. James Lewis Hatton is to have hold use posession enjoy as of his own estate all of the tract of land in Norfolk County, known as the "Poor House tract" all of the "Leckie Tract" that lies East of the Road to the U.S. Naval Hospital including the interst of Edward A. Hatton therein, also the remainder of the Lot with its improvements situate on the south side of London street purchased from A. C. Godwin after deducting therefrom 28 feet front allotted to Edward Alexander Hatton, and to pay to Miss Mary Ann Hatton five hundred dollars and to William Leckie Hatton eleven hundred dollars, Miss Mary Ann Hatton is to have hold use posses and enjoy as of her own estate, all of that lot situate on the south side of North street with the eastern portion of the Brick House bounded as follows commencing on the south side of North Street two hundred & four feet East of the S. E. intersection of Crawford & North streets, thence East thirty two feet, thence south one hundred & thirteen feet thence west thirty two feet, thence North one hundred and thirteen feet to the beginning--the House and lot situate on the south east corner of County and Dinwiddie streets fronting on County Street sicty two feet and on Dinwiddie Street eighty three feet--the undivided morety of the lot in Gosport owned jointly by Samuel Watts and John G. Hatton dec'd. Also Lot No. 2 (two) in the plan hereto annexed of the "Leckie tract" lying west of the road to the U.S. Naval Hospital and contains nineteen & six tenths acres bounded by Edward A. Hatton on the East and Wm. L. Hatton on the west and to receive of James L. Hatton the sum of five hundred dollars and from the estate of JOhn G. Hatton in money the like sum of five hundred dollars William Leckie Hatton is to have hold use poses and enjoy as of his own estate, the following viz, the Brick House and the lot on Crawford Street adjoining the property of the heirs of Charles L. Cocke decd; also the lot No. 3 (three) in the plan hereto annexed of the "Leckie tract" lying west of the road to the U.S. Naval Hospital and contains nineteen & six tenths acres bounded by Miss Mary Ann Hatton on the East and to receive from James Lewis Hatton the sum of Eleven hudnred dollars, and it is hereby covenanted and agreed by and between the said parties heretofor themselves and their heirs executed and administrators, that the said Edward A. Hatton, James L., Mary A, & William L. Hatton shall each have hold poses and enjoy as of their own estate free from the claims and demands of the others the herein befroe described lots pieces and parcels of land with their appurtenances monies and credits as herein before allotted & set apart to them respectively and it is further agreed by and between the parties aforesaid that this division shall be considered only as embracing the several lots pieces and parcels of land monies and credits as are hereinbefore refered to and none other. This deed was acknowledged before me by Edward Alexander Hatton and Susan R. his wife, James Lewis Hatton and Olivia J. his wife Mary Ann Hatton and William Leckie Hatton parties thereto, the said Susan R. Hatton and Olivia J. Hatton being privily examined seperate and apart from their respective husbands and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to them, severally acknowledged the same to be their act and deed and declared that they willingly executed the same and does not wish to reract it. The records show that William L. Hatton, private, 1st Company Independent Signal Corps, Confederate States Army, enlisted May 2, 1862, and was transferred to the 2d Company, said Corps, March 1, 1863. On the company roll for November and December 1864, last on file, he was reported present. It appears that he was one of the number of prisoners of war of Lee's and Johnson's Armies in April, 1865, but the records afford no information as to his disposition.

The application of William L. Hatton, of the City of Portsmouth, County of Norfolk, State of Virginia, sets forth that he, the said William L. Hatton was regularly enlisted and served, during the late war between the States, in the Confederate States army or navy, as follows:

Hatton, 507 S. Hanover St., Baltimore, whose post-office is Portsmouth, Virginia; that because of physcial disability he, the said William L. Hatton, is unable to probide for and support himself, and therefore he makes this his application for admission into the "Soldiers' Home"; and he swears or affirms that he is a person of sobriety and good habits, and, if admitted as an inmate to said Home, he hereby agress to abide by and obey all the rules and regulations made by the proper authorities of the Home for its government, and that he will perform all duties required of him, and obey all lawful orders of the officers of the said Home; and I sign this application with the full knowledge that any violation of the rules will subject me to punishment or dismissal, at the discretion of the Board of Visitors.

William Leckie Hatton, a former resident of this city, died yesterday morning in Richmond, of paralysis, with which he was stricken last Friday. Miss Mary E. Hatton, of Baltimore, his daughter, arrived in Richmond on Saturday, and was with her father when he died.
Mr. Hatton was well-known in this city, where he has numerous relatives.
The funeral service will take place tomorrow morning, in Richmond. The body will be forwarded to this city over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway at 12 o'clock and will arrive here at 3 o'clock. Burial services will take place in Cedar Grove cemetery immediately, after the arrival of the body.

The body of William Leckie Hatton, a former resident of the city, who died last Sunday morning in Richmond, was brought here at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon over the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and was coveyed to Cedar Grove cemetery where burial took place. Rev. Charles E. Donohoe, pastor of St. Paul's Catholic church, conducted the service.

Iola L. Cassell
Portsmouth--Iola L. Cassell, 80, of the 1300 block of Watson St., died June 15, 1993, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mrs. Cassell was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple, the Faith Club and Temple Guild. She was the widow of Theodore Cassell.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Hunter, and one son, Byron H. Cassell, both of Portsmouth; three sisters, Bernice Williams and Margie Davis, both of Portsmouth, and Thalia H. Morgan of Colorado; one brother, Linzie Hayes of Hampton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. I. S. Waters. Burial will be in the Cassell Family Cemetery, (Deep Cree), Chesapeake. The family will be at 1350 Watson St., Portsmouth. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
