*Nephritis: inflammation of the kidney
*Syphilis: also disease of Hispaniola, English disease, German disease, lues, mal Francaise, morbus gallicus, Neapolitan disease, Polish disease, the pox, St. Sement's disease, Spanish disease, Turkish disease. A chronic, infectious venereal disease named after a shepherd infected by the disease as documented in a poem written by Fracastorius (1530). Some believed that it had been spread by Spanish sailors returning from America in the late 1400's when it reached Italy and in a few years the whole of Europe. Other believe that it was introduced to America by the Europeans that came to America in the late 1400's. In the 19th century it was noted to have three fairly definable stages: the primary stage, evidenced by an ulcer (chancre) and buboes; the secondary stage, evidenced by general enlargement of the lymph glands, eruptions of the skin, pustules on the mucous membranes and sore throat; and the third (tertiary) stage, evidenced by growths that undergo degeneration (gummata) in the organs or other tissues of the body. In the early 20th century it was noted that dementia and walking disturbances were part of the last stage of the disease in some patients, which suggested nervous system involvement. 1181,1182
